Monitoring and wifi hook up

As great as it is to be able to see the output from your solar system and subsequent energy flow around the building, every inverter system has it’s own monitoring platform. And all monitoring systems show the same information in different ways. There are also a few generic monitoring platforms available that sit across many inverter systems.

Monitoring really does help you understand your energy use and usually leads to homeowners making greater savings and better use of the free energy they generate.

Since 2010, almost all systems have had the capability to have monitoring but many were never connected and most early adopters of solar will never have seen how the system performs other than every three months when they call the energy company to get paid under the old feed in tariff scheme.

In recent times and more so with the rise of battery installations, inverter companies have upped their game and now show energy flowing into and out of the grid, into the house from the solar, what’s going into and out of the battery and most importantly, how much you’re using in the home.

All battery systems also have a timer facility that allows smart charging from the grid to suit your user profile. Some monitoring platforms, allow remote access to the inverter so you can set timers etc from your phone or PC, others are controlled by buttons on the front of the inverter so placement of the inverter is paramount if looking for full access. No one wants ppl climbing into lofts to change settings!

One of the most common customer service calls we receive is where a client has changed their router or internet provider, or where the internet has dropped out for some reason and a client can no longer access the monitoring. The system will still be operating, the wifi has no baring on the actual operation of the system.

One piece of advice we give to all clients is to be on site with the engineer when he/she sets up the wifi connection during installation. It no different to any other internet connected device, but each system has it’s own process for re-connecting.

To that end, here’s a little guide for clients to get re-connected.
